Dr. Mbuyisi Mgibisa is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Institute for Pan-African Thought and Conversation (IPATC) at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. Previously, he served as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Multimedia within the Faculty of Art, Design, and Architecture (FADA) at the same university. He earned his PhD in 2023 in the field of Media Studies from the University of the Witwatersrand. His doctoral research received numerous awards and accolades, including the Refaat Alareer Memorial Prize for PhD Research Excellence (2023). Dr. Mgibisa’s research focuses on the intersection of media and decolonization, with particular emphasis on Black Consciousness, African philosophy, decolonial thought, and intersectional Black feminism. Currently, he is especially interested in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how everyday design-led thinking can contribute to addressing the complex contemporary problems we face today.
