‘I Am Not Your Negro’

The University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) Institute for Pan-African Thought and Conversation (IPATC), in collaboration with the UJ Department of Journalism, Film, and Television; the UJ Library; and African Screen Network (ASN) hosted the Johannesburg premiere of ‘I Am Not Your Negro’, a documentary about the African-American writer James Baldwin by the Haitian-American Director Raoul Peck.

Raoul Peck has used James Baldwin’s published and unpublished work including books, essays, letters, and interviews – with the voice of Samuel L. Jackson – to shed light on race issues in civil rights America, including personal notes that have never before been published. Peck juxtaposes Baldwin’s private words with his public utterances in a profoundly touching voyage through the history of race in America that has strong resonance to contemporary race issues in the US, South Africa, and beyond.
